Another up and coming rider from the Raleigh Clément Professional Cycling Team. Over the past few seasons this Marian University business major has shown she means business when it comes to bike racing.

Rider: Laurel Rathbun

Team: Raleigh-Clement

Age: 20

Q: Why do you race?

A: I love the thrill and the challenge. There is no other sport quite like cycling - especially cyclo-cross. It's muddy and cold, we crash and get hurt, we have bad races, bad seasons, bad years and somehow have to mentally and physically bounce back from that. All for the feeling of when everything goes right; nothing compares to that.

Q: Years riding vs years racing?

A: I started by riding around age 5 on the back of a tandem with my dad; he bribed me with cheese and crackers to go riding with him. At seven, I started racing local junior races (thanks mom and dad for driving hour + to the races every weekend).  13 years later, I still love racing.

Q: Favorite postrace meal?

A: Definitely Chipotle. I'm a big fan. BIG.

Q: Describe TRP in 4 words

A: Powerful, accurate, consistent, advantageous.

Q: Finish the sentence “I ride bikes …”

A: My instagram handle is @laurelridesbikes so it would be misleading if I didn't actually ride bikes.

Q: Best advice ever received?

A: "Try cyclo-cross. It will be fun"

Q: Worst racing advice ever received?

A:  "Try cyclo-cross. It will be fun"

Q: Favorite subject in school?

A: I would say accounting is my favorite subject. My favorite class, though, was a business class I took freshmen year where we were put in groups and came up with a business product or service we could sell on campus and did research, found vendors, made all the financial statements and then presented at the end of the year to local business men and women and whoever won got the money to start their business. It was a mini shark tank.
